SUMMARY:Black Parent Four Part Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for Black/African parents. Registration is now closed.\nThank you for your interest in joining us as we explore together the specific needs of Black children and the Black parenting experience. \nNOTE: Registration is for all four workshop dates. \nDates/Times: \nSeptember 23\, 2022 12:00pm-1:30pm\nSeptember 30\, 2022 5:00pm-6:30pm\nOctober 7\, 2022 12:00-1:30pm\nOctober 28\, 2022 12:00pm-1:30pm \nPresenter: \nMy name is Keyonia Williams\, LCSW\, CEO of Healing Black Souls. I’m originally from Newark\, NJ and it was there that I was able to grow\, learn\, and develop a strong cultural identity and sense of Black pride. From a very young age I knew that I wanted to do something that would help enrich and empower the lives of others. I’ve always had a passion for underserved and unprivileged communities of people. This is one of the things that lead me to study social work. I graduated from Walla Walla University in 2008 with my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and in 2009 with my Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work. \nI have spent the last 15 years in the mental health field in a number of different capacities. I have provided home visiting services to families involved with the Department of Human Services providing them with the skills to become self-sufficient and independent. I have also worked as a foster home advocate managing and licensing foster and adoptive homes. During that time\, I provided home studies for international adoptions as well. I have taught parenting classes and provided individual parent coaching for parents with small children as well. As a mental health therapist\, I have been providing counseling services to families and individuals struggling with trauma\, abuse\, and addiction issues. I have also facilitated trauma recovery groups. My strengths include working with individuals who struggle with depression\, PTSD\, anxiety\, grief & loss\, parenting challenges\, and low self-esteem. \nI currently specialize in culturally specific counseling\, coaching\, and consulting for individuals\, groups\, organizations\, and families. I believe in the power of change and that is what motivates me to continue to do this work. My goal is to serve my community by educating\, supporting\, and empowering. Therefore\, my approach is to help each person\, family\, or organization to reach their highest potential. \nWe will cover the following topics: \n\nThe impacts of racism and historical/generational trauma on Black parents and children\nCreating a Safe Haven for your Black children\, in the home\nTalking to Black Children about race and racism\nSupporting Black children in developing a strong cultural identity\nAlternatives to spanking and yelling\nBuilding a healthy relationship with your child\n\nPlease email us at tioinfo@pdx.edu with any questions. \nRegistration for this event is now closed.
