Equity Updates March/April 2020 – Actualizaciónes de Equidad Marzo y Abril 2020

Trustworthiness and Transparency is a Trauma Informed Care (TIC) principle we must now stand on more than ever. This can look different depending on identity and positionality in life, which determines who needs help AND if they are able to access it. It is transparent that a significant number of essential workers are immigrants and are put at higher risk of contracting the coronavirus. They will not fall into some of the protections provided by employee rights. This crisis brings their work front and center, their jobs can no longer be treated as out of sight, out of mind, which we as a society have typically done in theory and in practice. Now we are dependent on their labor which, for some, will be hard to admit. The argument that immigrants are taking “American” jobs is now an invalid one.
There is an appreciation for the front line and essential workers during this challenging time that is felt by most as they reflect on the important role immigrants play in keeping our country thriving and functioning. Immigrants are, in fact, not only working to ensure that the country is able to continue on in the midst of this pandemic but also taking care of those that have fallen ill to this virus. They make up a large number of the health workers that are working daily, around the clock, caring for the most vulnerable during this time.
Covid-19 has forced our nation to come to a screeching halt causing us to reshape our values and the realization that laboring, farming, and other blue-collar jobs matter. Most of those industries are largely overrepresented by immigrant workers and yet, they are the ones that will go without access and emergency relief that the government is providing. Our goal is to not only highlight the lack of resources and services available as well as barriers faced by this community, but also, especially now, the undeniable and vital role they play in keeping our country going during this pandemic.
Immigrant Workers: Vital to the U.S. COVID-19 Response, Disproportionately Vulnerable provides language and visual representation of who is working to keep our grocery stores, pharmacies, and other essential businesses up and running during this crisis as well as what populations are being impacted the most by the decline and decrease in demand of other industries.
Immigrant Eligibility for Public Programs provides a general overview of federal programs and services available and the immigrant eligibility for families, which shows immigrants receiving significantly less in comparison to those viewed as citizens.
