Trauma Informed Oregon’s First Collaborative Meeting
November 14, 2014
From: Margaret Cary, MD, MPH, Co-Director, Trauma Informed Oregon
On October 10th just over 130 Oregonians gathered to share experiences, learn from each other, and brainstorm ideas about strengthening and dissemination of trauma-informed practices throughout Oregon’s social, health, educational, and judicial services. People commented about their appreciation of working collaboratively with individuals from other organizations and systems of care. More interagency, interdisciplinary discussions were desired. In addition, there was strong motivation to move beyond conversation into measurable action. There was shared aspiration to further increase the cultural diversity of the collaborative.
Let us continue to work together to create a collaborative that is relevant to and advocates for all Oregonians, let us disseminate information about this collaborative, let us recruit our colleagues who have developed innovative ideas for promoting healing and health that deserve sharing!
Some of the additional ideas included:
- Expanding traditional ACEs screening to include both resiliency & strength markers as well as other adverse childhood events such as economic insecurity, food insecurity, racism and institutional oppression.
- Establishing standards for trauma informed practices.
- Creating a process for collecting outcome data about the impact of trauma-informed practices.
- Ensuring that the role of culture, the voices of survivors, and leadership from individuals who have experienced adverse events and trauma are all included in Trauma Informed Oregon recommendations.
